The Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies has issued a report entitled "Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols: Promoting Healthier Choices". The report supports a three point rating system which, in addition to requiring calorie count in reasonable household measure, awards points for not exceeding maximum levels of saturated and trans fats, sodium, and added sugars.

Pre-publication copies of the entire report may be downloaded from the IOM website.
